Engine 2 was established in 1886 to provide fire protection to the borough residents. Ever since, Engine 2 has been providing the borough with fire and rescue services, 24/7/365. If you’re interested in joining, visit the recruitment page for information!

The RFD contains 5 total fire companies. Engine 2 is located out of the Mortimer Avenue Firehouse on the south side of town near Route 3, along with the Special Service Unit (SSU) and Marine Unit (Marine 2). Engine 3 and Rescue 5 are located out of the West End Firehouse on Union Avenue, and Engine 4 and Truck 1 are located on Ames Avenue in downtown Rutherford. The RFD responds to numerous fire incidents in the borough including mutual aid assignments, alarms, water rescues/searches, elevator calls, standbys, gas leaks, EMS assists, smoke investigations, cooking fires & CO. incidents. In 2022 the RFD responded to 662 calls for service.

Engine 2 currently has 17 members, additionally we have probationary firefighters and junior firefighters (16/17 y/o).
